Requirements for Residential Rental Property

On March 13, 2017, the Allendale Township Board passed Ordinance 2017-4, which requires all residential rental properties within the Township to be registered with this Department, and allow for inspections of said rental structures. 

  • Rental Registration

    All properties must be registered with the Rental Housing Department by September 15th each year by submitting a Certificate of Compliance Application. A reminder will be mailed out to all rental property owners/agents prior to the due date. Late registrations will result in your certificate of compliance being revoked. An inspection will be set up immediately for all units not registered that will include all necessary re-inspection(s) and applicable fees.

    Certificate of Compliance Applications must be updated for any new rental properties, changes in ownership of existing rental properties, owner or agent address changes, or adding or removing an agent.  Return completed and signed Certificate of Compliance application form with applicable fee(s) to the rental department.

  • Certificate of Compliance

    The township requires Certificates of Compliance for all rental properties. This required rental certification is issued only after the township has completed a comprehensive interior and exterior inspection of the property and has found it to be in compliance with the 2015 Property Maintenance Code.  Fees associated with obtaining a Certificate of Compliance can be found in our Rental Housing Reference Guide.  A notice of inspection will be mailed to the property owner or agent at least 30 days prior to the Certificate of Compliance due date.  Failure to obtain certification through an inspection will result in significant enforcement fees. (See the Rental Housing Reference Guide for these fees).  An inspection checklist is available to assist owners/agents in inspection preparation. This is not an all-inclusive list. For a complete list, refer to the 2015 International Property Maintenance Code.

Upon receiving the copy of the complaint, a determination will be made if there is reasonable ground to inspect the unit. Notification will be sent to you with what was determined.  If an inspection date is set, you are not required to be there but is strongly encouraged. If requested, we will notify you of the results.

Property Tax Bills

Property tax bills may be paid at the Township office every tax cycle, up to a certain date. After that date, taxes must be paid at the County offices. Please contact the Finance Department at 895-6295, for information on the cut off date.

Tax Deferments

Applications for tax deferment are available to those who qualify. Please note that you must complete tax deferment forms with each tax cycle...even though you may have applied before. Qualifications include...senior citizens, disabled, eligible serviceperson, widow, or widower. Please contact the Finance Department at 895-6295, for more details.


Dog Licenses

Dog licenses may be purchased at the Township office in the month that your dog's rabies vaccine is due. New dogs and puppies may be licensed at any time.

The Planning Commission generally meets on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month for its regular meetings.  The Zoning Board of Appeals meets every month on the first Thursday. CemeteryThe Allendale Township Cemetery is located on the west side of 60th Avenue, between Warner St. and Lincoln St., north of Lake Michigan Drive (M-45), at 12655 60th Avenue. The first recorded burial was in 1851. The original cemetery property consisted of 10 acres, and an additional 10 acres was purchased in 1999 for future expansion.

The cemetery is open to the public daily from dawn to dusk.       Click Here for a layout Map

Please note the following:
• All flowers must be planted in movable containers with handles
• The Township will remove all floral designs, flowers, weeds, trees, shrubs, plants or herbage if it becomes unsightly, dangerous, detrimental or diseased
• All trees planted on or removed from any grave sites must be done by the Township
• The Township may remove all wreaths and flowers in late fall
• Footings will be installed by the Township only, after both/all parties named on the headstone are buried



Fall Cemetery Cleanup

The Township maintenance staff conducts a fall clean-up in the cemetery each year at the end of October. Families are asked to pick up floral arrangements and/or any loose items that are now on their family grave sites. During the cleanup process, floral arrangements, both real and artificial, that are not in typical cemetery containers (such as cement urns or baskets with a handle) and any loose items that have not yet been picked up by family members will be discarded. The only exception will be floral arrangements for burials which took place in the months of September and October.

Allendale Charter Twp Fire Dept

Allendale Charter Township houses Grand Valley State University. We have a population of over 20,000 plus a student population of about 24,000. Allendale Fire Department covers 32 square miles bordered by the Grand River.

Allendale Fire Department consists of 30 members, two of those members being full time employees of the Township, Chief Mike Keefe and Fire Inspector Dave Pelton.  Our call volume for 2015 was  over 1049 calls, the vast majority of those calls being EMS related. The Department continues to grow each year and strives for the professionalism that all fire departments strive for, large or small.

Allendale Charter Twp Police Department

Allendale Charter Township contracts with the Ottawa County Sheriff Department for police protection. 
The mission of your Ottawa County Sheriff’s office continues to be that of “preserving public order and supporting the Constitution of the State of Michigan through enforcement of state and local laws.” Their mission is accomplished by providing 24 hour service to Ottawa County communities in the areas of responding to direct request for law enforcement service, criminal investigations traffic enforcement and general assistance to the public.  With this established mission, they continue to place a significant emphasis on the victims and the communities. Their mission is furthered by the ability to office a correctional facility that meets the needs of the criminal justice system in Ottawa County.

Allendale Cemetery

The Allendale Cemetery is located at 12655 60th Avenue, Allendale MI 49401.  It is a quiet, beautiful old cemetery located out in the Allendale countryside. The oldest graves date back to the 1840’s. It is the only cemetery owned and operated by the Township.

Allendale Community Parks

The Allendale Community Park  behind (south) of the Township office, located at 6676 Lake Michigan Drive.  The park is comprised of 40 acres.  During the warm months, the park is a busy place.  We have an outstanding softball and Little League facilities, which attract teams and players from a wide geographic area. 

Facilities include ballfields, premier playground and splash pad, tennis/pickleball courts, basketball court, picnic shelters, Knowlton House Museum and gardens and the Veterans Memorial.
