A Year in Review
By Larry Haveman

2007 was another busy year for the Maintenance Department!

Improvements made to the Township Park were a sidewalk on the west side of the pond, new playground equipment, tennis/basketball court renovations,  a new soccer field with goals, picnic shelter renovations, new picnic tables, new fence for ball field #1, and the installation of surveillance cameras.

Other projects the Maintenance Department is working on are the park feature on the northwest corner of the park, “The Landings” sign at the northwest corner of 64th Ave. and Lake Michigan Dr., Henry Street landscaping, lighting and irrigation, and new sidewalk installations.

The Maintenance Department maintains the sidewalks, landscaping, and lights along Lake Michigan Drive.  This department also maintains the Township Library, Township offices, and park buildings, along with the upkeep of the associated equipment.  Becky McGee and Brenda Borst are contracted to clean the inside of the Library and Township office buildings.

The Maintenance Department also maintains the cemetery grounds with help from work
release crews from Ottawa County Jail.   To contact the Maintenance Department call
895-6295, ext. 8.

Sidewalk Guidelines

Please note the following rules for the Township sidewalks...

• Motorized vehicles (including snowmobiles) are NOT allowed on the sidewalks...the exception being vehicles used for the disabled.

• Bicycles are encouraged to use the sidewalks, and stay off from the busy roadways.

• Please keep your trash containers off the sidewalks.

• Snow may not be shoveled on to the sidewalks.

Fire Hydrants

Do you have a fire hydrant in front of or near your home or business? Can you find it under the snow in the winter? Please help the Fire Department by keeping the snow cleared away from your fire hydrant. This will greatly help the Fire Department if it is necessary to sue the hydrant for a fire at your home or business. Please make sure your private snow plowers do not pile snow in front of the hydrants. Your cooperation is appreciated!

Gravel Roads

The Township gravel roads are treated for dust control the months of June, July and August. If you should have any questions, please contact Jim Beelen, Township Supervisor, at 895-6295.

Clean-up Day

In the spring of each year, the Township sponsors a Clean Up Day in the Community Park on a Saturday morning. Watch the Announcer for details!
